Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does Horizon and its staff believe?
The Lord Jesus Christ is preeminent in all things, including the school and family. We see the child as inseparable from his and her family, as is clearly ordained by God in the Holy Bible. (Deuteronomy 6:7-8). For this reason, we believe it is the parents who are responsible for the education of their children. The Christian school serves as an extension of the Christian family, existing to support parents in their responsibility before God to enable each child to develop his or her academic potential.

2. What does Horizon do about doctrinal issues?
We are a non-denominational school that respects the various traditions that have arisen in the Christian faith over the past two thousand years. Horizon’s students and staff come to us from many different church backgrounds, but we make every effort to maintain the unity of the faith. We believe that worship and differing traditions are primarily the business of the individual’s family and their church, so we refer students with denominational-specific questions back to their parents and pastors for guidance.

3. What curriculum is utilized at Horizon?
We have spent a great deal of time researching and developing a college preparatory curriculum that we believe best meets the needs of young adult Christians. We select our materials and text books to meet the standards of the particular course while always considering the Christian worldview. Some of our texts come from “Christian” publishers but some come from “secular” ones.

4. What is the dress code at Horizon?
We do not have a rigid dress code. We allow the students considerable latitude in making proper dress decisions. Wednesday, however, we have chapel service in the morning and appropriate worship attire is required that day. We do expect students to try to dress modestly so that they do not draw extra attention. Parental review and approval is always appreciated in guiding the students to appropriate attire. If necessary, we will invite the student not to wear the questionable attire a second time.

5. What classes are offered for 9th graders?
We require each student to take English 9, Bible 9, Science 9 (Biology), Mathematics 9 (Algebra/Geometry), Phys Ed/Health, Computer, and electives. The electives available will be determined each semester. Tentatively, the electives will be Spanish, Art, Music, Speech/Drama and Study Hall.

6. What is the typical homework load for 9th graders?
We expect our students to complete an average of one and a half hours of homework per night during the school week. Study Hall will be available to students that cannot get their homework done in that time frame. Projects will be assigned over a longer duration so that students can budget their time accordingly.

7. What is the grading scale at Horizon?

A = 96-100
A- = 93-95
B+ = 90-92
B = 87-89
B- = 84-86
C+ = 81-83

C = 77-80

D+ = 71-73
D = 68-70

8. Does Horizon offer sports and/or extra-curricular activities?
We have a beautiful campus situated on 95 wooded acres. The campus boasts a gymnasium, tennis court, swimming pool, rock climbing wall, and walking trails. We offer after school rock climbing to all 9th graders. We plan to field a freshman basketball team. Depending on the enrollment size and individual interest in team sports, we will offer as much as is practical. We will offer speech and drama activities and meets.
